Dystonia is a movement disorder in which the muscles contract, which causes frequent involuntary movements or changes in posture. Therefore, this disease gets in the way of daily activities, causes social isolation and can be painful for muscle contractions. Furthermore, with this wave of acceptance and new research into cannabis, do we know if CBD can help treat dystonia?
In 1984, there was a report published of a patient with Meige syndrome. The patient benefited from the treatment with 200 mg of CBD. Meige syndrome is a form of dystonia that affects the eyelid and the muscles of the face.
How can CBD help?
In a preliminary pilot open study, they administered five patients with dystonic movement disorders with CBD. The oral doses of CBD were administered that increased from 100 to 600 mg / day for a period of 6 weeks along with the standard medication. The improvement related to the dose in the dystonia varied from 20 to 50%. However, the side effects of CBD were mild and included hypotension, dry mouth, psychomotor retardation, light-headedness and sedation. Finally, in 2 patients with dystonia, with coexisting parkinsonian characteristics, CBD at doses higher than 300 mg / day exacerbated hypokinesia and tremor at rest.
In studies with mice, the natural cannabinoid CBD attenuated catalepsy, characterized by muscle rigidity and fixity of posture. Catalepsy caused by antipsychotic drug haloperidol, by L-nitro-N-arginine (L-NOARG) or by the synthetic cannabinoid WIN55,212-2, which acts similarly to THC. Furthermore, the researchers observed, “These findings indicate that CBD can attenuate catalepsy caused by different mechanisms through the activation of 5-HT1A receptors. Therefore, suggesting that it could be useful in the treatment of striatal disorders.” Among these disorders are Parkinson’s disease, dystonia and dyskinesia.
