Scientists have been studying the effect of the cannabinoid cannabidiol on healing and bone development over the past decade. It seems that scientists can agree that CBD can accelerate the healing process of broken bones in the body and make them stronger.
A study published in the February 2009 edition of International Immunopharmacology tested the effects of 5 milligrams of cannabidiol in an experimental model of rat periodontitis. After 30 days, a morphometric analysis of the alveolar bone loss showed that the animals treated with CBD presented a decreased alveolar bone loss and a lower expression of the activator of the nuclear factor kB ligand RANKL / RANK. The gingival tissues also showed a decrease in neutrophil migration associated with a lower interleukin. And a production of tumor necrosis factor.
How can CBD help?
Another study conducted in 2009 and published online with PNAS showed. In addition, that endocannabinoids activate the binding of GTPyS through the GPR55 receptor. The study concluded that cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2 affect bone metabolism. The stimulatory effects on osteoclast function were attenuated by CBD. GPR55 suppresses the formation of osteoclasts, but stimulates the formation of osteoclasts. This report also states that CBD significantly reduced bone absorption in vivo.
The most recent study to date published in the European Journal of Pharmacology in August 2017. The scientists investigated the therapeutic effects of CBD on sub-regional bone loss in a rat model with spinal cord injury. It was showing that CBD increased bone volume, trabecular thickness, trabecular number and reduced trabecular separation in the proximal tibias. It also increased the final compression load, rigidity and energy to the maximum force of the femoral shaft. With these results, the author concludes that the administration of CBD reduces the severity of spinal cord injury induced by the loss of sub-regional cancellous bone.
Studies conducted over the years show how useful cannabinoid treatment can be in helping to heal bone fragments. By increasing the volume and thickness of trabecular bone and the presence of non-absorbed cartilage. It has also been seen that CBD increases the strength of cured femurs, and may be of therapeutic value for spinal cord injuries, since it decreases the loss of bone mineral that occurs in these lesions.
