Fibrous dysplasia is a rare and chronic bone disorder in which a scar-like tissue develops instead of normal bone. As a result, the bone weakens and is susceptible to deformation or fracture. According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the condition begins before birth and caused by a genetic mutation. Despite the abnormal formation of bone before birth, the condition is usually not known until childhood, when the abnormal fibrous tissue has grown and expanded, causing the onset of symptoms.
There is no cure for fibrous dysplasia and surgical treatment is often necessary to help reduce its progression. Medications used to decrease the activity of cells that are responsible for dissolving the bone. When surgery occurs, the affected bone has metal implants to repair breaks or deformities and to prevent further fractures. The bone graft replaces the removed fibrous tissue. However, over time, the bone graft is often absorbed and replaced again with the fibrous tissue.
So how can CBD help?
Pain is a major concern for patients with fibrous dysplasia. The pain can be a pain in the bones, throbbing or radiating pain. For the treatment of chronic pain, bone pain and weakness, CBD oil can provide almost immediate relief for patients with fibrous dysplasia. CBD activates CB1 and CB2 receptors, which can help control pain levels. In some cases, the use of CBD for fibrous dysplasia may treat pain that does not respond to traditional treatment options.
Stiffness is another symptom associated with the condition. Surgical procedures to treat the condition can contribute to rigidity. CBD helps reduce stiffness, which increases the ability to move more easily. By reducing pain and stiffness, it helps patients live a more normal life.
