Archaeological evidence proves that the plant was an important part of the development of early civilization, used for everything from building, clothing, ropes and much more.
They have even discovered evidence that seeds and oils from the plant were a food source in China dating back to 6000 BCE. While there are many reasons to use it, its main use in China is believed to be medicine due to the positive effects that it had on suffering people.
Some archaeologists believe that the plant was one of the first to grow and harvest when it all began.
Emperor Shen-Neng expanded the research into the plants medicinal value. Believed to be the first to document the plant as a medicine back in 2737 BCE he successfully treated pains that he was experiencing due to both rheumatism and gout.
Records from back then reveal that different parts of the plant had different uses. Like for example, the roots would treat blood clots and infections. However, in around 2000 BCE, Chinese farmers had taken the plant to Korea, where it´s medicinal uses were further studied as the plant continued to spread throughout Asia and into Europe.
CBD in ancient India
Between 2000 and 1000 BCE, the Indians used the plant in both religious and annual celebrations in the form of a drink called Soma as well as another called Bhang. So, the first is similar to the Chinese’s use of infusing it with wine; however, Bhang, is an infusion with milk that in fact is still used in India to this day for both religious, medical and recreational reasons.

They were also the first to bring the plant to Europe when they brought it to Germany about 2800 years ago.
CBD in ancient Greece
Just like in all other places that we have looked at, when the plant arrived to Greece in 200 BCE, medicine was its main use. Treating anything from earaches to period pains, the Greeks went a step further and began treating not just humans with the plant but also treating their animals, mainly their horses that got injured in battle. The roots of the plant treated burns, and the leaves treated sores on horses as well as nosebleeds in humans. The seeds worked great for tapeworms as well as combined with the leaves and water or wine to treat pain, inflammation and constipation.
